Kuterevo, a bear sanctuary
Visit the charming Velebit village of Kuterevo, known for its refuge for young bears that you can see up close. The shelter is the result of the efforts and work of volunteers who have dedicated their time to create a visitor education program as well as a physical refuge to protect the bear habitat.
Kuterevo is located in a narrow Velebit bay near the town of Otočac. You can visit the refuge during spring, summer, and autumn, but not during the winter when bears are hibernating and should not be disturbed. Upon arrival, contact the Volunteer Station for instructions and information.
State of Mind. Kuterevo was a fantastic experience. Another dimension kind of thing. I'm blessed to have participated in a volunteer camp in Kuterevo.
A refugee camp for bear, a really nice place to go visit. Volunteers from all around the world gather there to help the brown bears who somehow lost their connection to their mothers or the wild life. You can see them really close up and there is a lot of information about the bears.
